ABC was increasing, since it's annual Halloween special "It is the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (2.3/6 in 18-49, 7.4 million audiences overall) roughly bending what "Charlie's Angels" did within the demo a week ago. That could have assisted 9 p.m. veteran "Grey's Anatomy" (3.7/9 in 18-49, 9.8 million audiences overall), that was up a little week to week called the night's No. 1 drama in 18-49 and 25-54 (4.3/10). And also at 10, "Private Practice" (2.4/6 in 18-49, 6.six million audiences overall) was up a tick week to week, though that's susceptible to revision within the excellent since its score features a two-minute overrun from "Grey's." NBC, which like CBS counts on males for a large amount of their Thursday audience, was substandard with "Community" (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.5 million audiences overall), "Parks and Entertainment" (1.8/5 in 18-49, 3.9 million audiences overall), "WorkInch (2.8/7 in 18-49, 5.5 million audiences overall) and "Whitney" (2.1/5 in 18-49, 4.3 million audiences overall), though "Whitney" was up a tick from the low of two days ago and maintained an enhanced area of its "Office" lead-in. There is no bump, meanwhile, at 10 p.m. for "Prime Suspect" (1.2/3 in 18-49, 4.a million audiences overall), that was lower a tick from the newest original and it has now rejected four straight occasions following its sluggish series premiere the Peacock had wished to create more curiosity about the battling cop drama by airing multiple repeats from the show throughout yesteryear week. At CW, "The Vampire Journals" (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.two million audiences overall) and "The Key Circle" (1./2 in 18-49, 2.3 million audiences overall) -- two implies that figured to enjoy Halloween week -- increased with a tick in grown ups 18-34. "Vampire" was competitive using the major nets in the hour among women 12-34 (2.1/6) striking a season full of total audiences. Preliminary 18-49 earnings for that evening: Fox, 5.8/15 CBS, 3./8 ABC, 2.8/7 NBC, 1.7/4 Univision, 1.6/4 CW, 1.2/3. RUPE Around The ROPES At Annual Meeting: Insults Fly As News Corp Fights Investors Pushing For Better Governance & Independent Boss

Within the wall-to-wall coverage of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi yesterday, that was centered by nasty images of his lifeless body which i felt the systems went overboard with, two moments separated itself. The oddest was when Regis Philbin read live this news of Gaddafi’s dying on Accept Regis And Kelly to cheers and applause in the audience so large that the veteran host was taken aback. Probably the most intriguing was Secretary of Condition Hillary Clinton’s response to reading through this news on her behalf Rim, accidentally caught on tape: you rarely see condition authorities such unguarded moments. For TV personas who separated itself, Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart did his factor by having an amusing take a look at Gaddafi with all of his weirdness along with the news coverage of his dying. Grooveshark hooks demo data for labels

As the battle for dominance in the streaming music field heats up, with leading services all increasing offerings, forging partnerships and expanding catalogs, the name Grooveshark seems to have largely been missing from the conversation. But the Gainesville, Florida-based company has not been on the wane. Active in the streaming space since 2007, and offering free access to streaming music before Spotify did, Grooveshark currently claims 34 million unique monthly users worldwide. But for Paul Geller, Grooveshark's VP of business development, that data on user numbers isn't nearly as exciting as the types of data those users can provide.Collecting reams of consumer data and listening history (four petabytes per month), and then aggregating that data for musicians and brands, Grooveshark hopes to become a leader applying consumption data to music marketing, while also serving as a middleman connecting bands to the brands interested in sponsoring them."You don't want to be in a situation where artists have to endorse something just to get paid," Geller said, but added that such sponsorships are quickly becoming the norm, and can be done in increasingly unobtrusive ways. And it's hard to argue with that logic when even the most irascible of indie artists are signing on to a Mountain Dew-owned record label or turning to brands like Converse to pay for studio time.Grooveshark aims to be the one to make the introduction between the band and the brand, along with providing the hard numbers explaining why a certain band makes sense to an advertiser. As an example, Geller points to a recent campaign the company arranged for MSN during last spring's SXSW festival in Austin. The company approached Grooveshark for a campaign, and rather than simply recruiting bands to endorse the company, they identified appropriate artists who were then recruited to recommend other acts to see at the festival, with MSN only appearing as a sponsor."Indie artists don't have the ear of Mercedes or AmEx," Geller noted, adding that these sort of targeted cross-promotional ventures are "what great managers have been doing for the last five to ten years. But not every band has a Troy Carter or a Bruce Flohr working for them. We can do that for everyone else."Backing up his claims, Geller points to the click-through rates that ad campaigns have experienced through the site (one campaign involving electro artist Deadmau5 claimed a CTR of 24%), the result of extremely targeted data gathering, involving 10-12 different data attributes, ranging from the simple gender, age and location of an advertising target, to their household income, social media virality and even what Geller calls "more ephemeral questions," such as whether a user would describe themselves as a Blackberry or an iPhone."Individually, it would be offensive to suggest that you can peg someone with that sort of question," he said. But taken together with a number of other data points, particularly those related to a user's influence within social media and willingness to use it, Geller says the company can make very accurate assumptions over what sorts of brands a user might have an affinity for.Perhaps the most intriguing application of this data involves what Geller calls "repertoire modeling," in which the company can analyze consumption data from an established artist's entire career, and then look for similar patterns among newer acts. The potential applications are significant -- if a young band's support seems to line up similarly to previous successful bands, it could be a valuable A&R tool(providing chartable metrics suggesting when a band is about to break big), or concert promoters (identifying the markets in which the band's listenership is particularly committed). It's perhaps ironic, then, that label participation has been the company's biggest stumbling block so far. With its music provided and uploaded by users, Grooveshark operates under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and at the moment, only has a licensing agreement with one of the four major label groups -- EMI. Universal Music Group filed a copyright infringement suit against Grooveshark in 2010, and most recently prog rockers King Crimson have complained about the service's lag in taking down unauthorized streams of its music."We got a lot of flack for starting the way we did," Geller notes, referring to the company's location, far from Silicon Valley, and lack of the type of venture capital support that other streaming services have enjoyed. "We would love to settle with UMG, and we're ready to have those discussions... We're trying to build a company the old-fashioned way." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Weekend Receipts: Real Steel Cuts Loose on Footloose

Kick up your Sunday lose! Real Steel used robot abilities to topple the very well-received Footloose remake at the box office this weekend, though only by a slim margin. The Thing chimes in with a halfway decent showing, and The Big Year’s first receipts are… well, un-big. Let’s investigate. 1. Real Steel Gross: $16,304,000 ($51,744,000) Screens: 3,440 We don’t live in a world where fancy-free dance movies can beat robot jousts at the box office, and that saddens me. But Real Steel’s staying power makes me think I’m one step closer to realizing my dream of adapting robotic versions of American Gladiators events as standalone movies. You would totally go to see Robo-Atlasphere, right? Tom Hardy as Nitro? Come now. 2. Footloose Gross: $16,100,000 Screens: 3,549 Let’s give Kenny Wormald a hand, because he’s damn fun alongside up-and-comer Julianne Hough in this jam. Does this mean we’ll be seeing truly old-school dance movies like Beach Blanket Bingo in the remake hopper soon? Let’s see Emma Roberts do the swim! 3. The Thing Gross: $8,700,000 Screens: 2,996 Ah, cheap horror: a glorious American landmark. It finished third, yes, but The Thing more than earned back its budget this weekend. Which reminds me: Was I the only person that pretty much totally enjoyed Scream 4? Did you know that it took in close to $100 million at the box office? Don’t ask why I have Emma Roberts on the brain this morning. 4. The Ides of March Gross: $7,500,000 ($22,154,000) Screens: 2,199 George Clooney’s admirable, if somewhat surface political thriller features a handful of great characters (and one dubious character in the form of Evan Rachel Wood), and looks like it’s going to finish its box office tally somewhere between the triumph of Good Night and Good Luck and the resounding disappointment of Leatherheads. Kind of appropriate for this middle-of-the-pack, 2-and-a-half-star feature. 5. Dolphin Tale Gross: $6,345,000 ($58,672,000) Screens: 3,286 Somewhere, the original Flipper is smoking a Winston and squawking angrily about how pandering dolphin pictures have become. 6. Moneyball Gross: $5,500,000 ($57,712,000) Screens: 2,840 I see the agreement Moneyball made with Dolphin Tale to gross the exact same numbers is holding up. I wonder if Billy Beane wrote out the agreement himself as his zaftig associate crunched the numbers in a bookish tizzy. Now, let’s skip past a couple of unremarkable players at this weekend’s cineplex to locate the single most disappointing newcomer of the week. 9. The Big Year Gross: $3,325,000 Screens: 2,150 Yow. The Big Year finished behind 50/50 and Courageous — two small movies that aren’t even trying anymore — to drum up that low, low number. I consider this a depressing moment for Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, and a very minor slip in amazingness for Movieline’s untouchable BFF Anjelica Huston. Hilary Swank & More Slammed For Attending Chechen Concert

First Published: October 12, 2011 9:34 AM EDT Credit: Getty Images MOSCOW, Russia -- Caption Hilary Swank hits the red carpet the premiere of Something Borrowed at Graumans Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Calif., on May 3, 2011 An international human rights watchdog lambasted an Oscar-winning actress and other Western celebrities on Wednesday for attending a concert held on the birthday of Chechnyas Kremlin-backed leader, who has been accused of grave rights abuses. The NY-based Human Rights Watch said that American actress Hilary Swank, Belgian actor Jean Claude Van Damme and British violinist Vanessa Mae attended the concert in the Chechen capital, Grozny. The Oct. 5 show was held at a police-cordoned stage on Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrovs 35th birthday. Human Rights Watch urged the artists to avoid legitimizing people like Kadyrov, who has been accused by rights groups of having orchestrated abductions, extrajudicial killings and the enforcement of sharia law in Chechnya, a Russian republic. Ramzan Kadyrov is linked to a grim record of abuse, the groups Europe and Central Asia director Huge Williamson said in a statement. When stars get paid to turn up to party with (Kadyrov), it trivializes the suffering of countless victims of human rights abuses. The artists representatives were not immediately available for comment. Kadyrov is a former separatist rebel who changed sides before the second Chechen war started in 1999. Respected human rights groups have documented disappearances, house torchings and extra-judicial killings, and say they have evidence of Kadyrovs direct participation in torturing crime suspects. Kadyrov has consistently denied involvement in any of the killings, saying the accusations are fabricated to blacken his name. Dozens of Russian politicians, film and sports stars also attended the concert and praised Kadyrov from a stage arranged between a gigantic mosque and a newly built business center. During the birthday show, Swank said that she has been taken by the Chechen governments passion to make peace and to make something beautiful. I hope to have a film premiere here, the two-time Oscar winner clad in a streaming evening dress said in remarks televised on Chechen state television. Happy birthday, Mr. President. Action star Van Damme said he spoke from his heart, but mispronounced Kadyrovs name and called Chechnya a nation. The audience gave Kadyrov a standing ovation when the bullnecked and burly man performed a traditional Chechen dance during a song that praised his rule and called Chechnya the center of the universe. Under Kadyrovs leadership and backed by huge tranches of money from the federal budget, Chechnya has become relatively quiet. Grozny, left mostly in ruins by two wars, has risen from the rubble, and the insurgent violence that once gripped Chechnya has largely migrated to neighboring republics of the volatile Caucasus region. About That Time We Awkwardly Explained the Definition of 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' to Kirsten Dunst

Manic Pixie Dream Girl is a term coined by AV Club writer Nathan Rabin after watching Kirsten Dunst's performance in the 2005 Cameron Crowe film 'Elizabethtown.' Rabin describes the Manic Pixie Dream Girl as a, "cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures." The term has now grown to encompass performances as iconic as Holly Golightly in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' to more recent performances like Zooey Deschanel's turn as Summer Finn in '(500) Days of Summer.' I spoke to Dunst just this afternoon about her award-winning role in 'Melancholia,' and when I asked her to comment on the phenomenon of MPDGs, I assumed she knew the term. Alas, she did not. The end result was myself awkwardly trying to explain to Kirsten Dunst the definition of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl -- something I did extremely poorly. What's your opinion of the term Manic Pixie Dream Girl? What is that? Oh... it was coined for your character in 'Elizabethtown.' Oh? It kind of means... That's so weird. What's it called? The Manic Pixie... Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I guess it means that there's a dream girl who is also manic. And pixie-ish... and I think... I don't find I'm manic at all. I'm very chill. Well, yeah, in person. I think they mean your character. Oh, in 'Elizabethtown'? Yes. Right. So... But I feel that all of Cameron's girls are quirky with a sparkle. You know what I mean? Like, they are always kind of, you know... talk too much. You know what I mean? Holly Golightly is a good example. Yeah, You're right. Yeah. What do you think of that term? I don't like it, to be honest. That's understandable. No, I don't. I think it's weird sounding. [The publicist walks in to signify that our time is up] So, on that note... The Hard Sell: Movie marketing in a new age

Remember the days when all a movie needed was a trailer to sell it?Now, in a rapidly changing and very competitive industry, it takes much more to sell a movie to its target audience. For a film marketer like Ira Rubenstein, exec VP of digital marketing at 20th Century Fox and a panelist at Variety's Film Marketing Summit, it's fun to think of new ways to get a movie noticed."A case in point is 'The Sitter,' " he says, referring to the ad with Jonah Hill's picture above text that read "Need a Sitter" and phone numbers on tear-off slips. "We posted a one-sheet in colleges and did wild postings in Los Angeles. The ad was also online and on Facebook. If you called (the number), Jonah might actually pick up, otherwise you would get a voicemail -- that was reinforced with publicity work with Jonah on radio talkshows."This worked well for that particular film, Rubenstein says, as the film concerns a babysitter and it's a comedy, but it would be hard to say how it would do with another film, say a family film or a four-quadrant blockbuster."That's the fun of marketing; you get to be creative through traditional means, but traditional is no longer traditional," he says. The biggest challenge facing marketers is how to be different from the competition, especially on any given weekend that sees three or four films opening. The penetration of smartphones and the increased speed of the wireless networks will play a bigger role in theatrical marketing, says Rubenstein -- only recently have execs started to discover the capabilities of marketing films on such mobile devices."There is tremendous growth in mobile device browsing, so the question is, as people use devices more and more to engage in social marketing, how can we get them to find out about our films and buy a ticket?" he asks.Rubenstein is proactive in competing for filmgoers in his own way through meetings with startups and young companies and keeping up with his contacts in the venture capital world, who tip him off to new technology. He processes all the information to see if there is a way to leverage a certain service in marketing."You try things," he says. "That's what my job is, and I try to keep my eye looking forward as well as keeping my eye on what's opening this weekend and constantly evaluating -- the fun part is that things are constantly changing."
